Licensing for Military Members and Spouses

The following information is intended for military veterans, current members of the Armed Forces of the United States and their spouses to assist you in obtaining registration as a professional engineer or professional surveyor in Ohio and renewing registrations.

 

Eligibility for Registration as a Professional Engineer

1.  Completion of EAC or ETAC ABET accredited engineering curriculum of four years or more.

2.  Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination

                 - The NCEES FE examination required for registration as a professional engineer is on the Department of Veterans Affairs qualified list of non-federal government

                    licensure and certification examinations, allowing eligible veterans and their dependents to be reimbursed

                    for the cost of the test.

3.  Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) examination

                 - The NCEES PE examination required for registration as a professional engineer is on the Department of Veterans Affairs qualified list of non-federal government

                    licensure and certification examinations, allowing eligible veterans and their dependents to be reimburse for the cost of the test.

                  - Ohio Revised Code 4733.11 (C) provides that for a professional engineer’s practical experience requirement, or surveying experience, for a professional surveyor’s

                   practical experience requirement, in any of the armed forces of the United States or civilian war services

                    may be credited for registration, if the experience is acceptable to the board.

                 - Ohio Administrative Code 4733-9-02 (C) specifically provides that engineering experience gained in the armed services is acceptable experience.



Eligibility for Registration as a Professional Surveyor

1.  Completion of ABET accredited or Board-approved surveying curriculum of four years or more.

2.  Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination

                 - The NCEES FS examination required for registration as a professional engineer is on the Department of Veterans Affairs qualified list of non-federal government

                   licensure and certification examinations, allowing eligible veterans and their dependents to be reimbursed for the cost of the test.

3.  Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS) examination

                 - The NCEES PS examination required for registration as a professional engineer is on the Department of Veterans Affairs qualified list of non-federal government

                    licensure and certification examinations, allowing eligible veterans and their dependents to be reimbursed for the cost of the test.

                 - Ohio Revised Code 4733.11 (C) provides that for a professional engineer’s practical experience requirement, or surveying experience, for a professional surveyor’s

                   practical experience requirement, in any of the armed forces of the United States or civilian war services may be credited for registration, if the experience is

                   acceptable to the board.

                 - Ohio Administrative Code 4733-9-02 (C) specifically provides that engineering experience gained in the armed services is acceptable experience.



License Renewal

Fee Exemption

Ohio Revised Code 4733.15 permits the Board to waive the biennial renewal fee for registrants on active duty with any branch of the armed forces of the United States or a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard or the national guard of any other state.

 

License renewal fees may be waived if a registrant, or the registrant’s spouse, is on active duty in the U.S. military. A request must be made in writing to the Board including official documentation of military active duty.

Continuing Education

Waiver of Continuing Professional Development Requirement

Ohio Revised Code 4733.15 permits the Board to waive the continuing professional development requirement for registrants on active duty with any branch of the armed forces of the United States.

 

The Board’s continuing professional development requirement may be waived if a registrant, or the registrant’s spouse, is on active duty in the U.S. military. A request must be made in writing to the Board including official documentation of military active duty.

Prioritized Application Processing and Temporary Registration

Prioritized Application Processing

Military applicants have the option to indicate their military status on the application and thereby have their application prioritized for processing.

 

Temporary Registration

Ohio Revised Code 4733.18 (A) provides that the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors may authorize a temporary registration for an individual who has filed with the board an application for a temporary registration and has paid the required fee. The temporary registration will be valid during the time the board requires for consideration of the application for registration, provided a person is legally qualified to practice that profession in the person’s own state in which the requirements and qualifications of registration are not lower than those specified in this chapter.
