Study Materials

The Board cannot suggest and does not supply study materials for NCEES exams.

The NCEES PE is open-book exams. The NCEES PS exam is closed book however a reference book will be provided at the exam site.  Information about allowed and disallowed reference materials can be found on the NCEES Exam-day policies web page. Board policy is the same as NCEES policy; there are no exceptions.

New NCEES PS and Ohio PS exam info

General Information regarding the changes to the PS exams

 
  • As of April 2016, the paper and pencil NCEES Principles and Practice (NCEES PS) exam is no longer offered
  • The Ohio state-specific professional surveying exam (OHPS) will remain paper and pencil, but will no longer be offered at April and October exam sites; all OHPS exam will be administered in the office
  • Applicants must take and pass NCEES PS exam before taking OHPS
  • NCEES registration for NCEES PS exam will open June 20, 2016
  • NCEES CBT exams appointments for the actual exam will begin in October 2016 at Pearson Vue testing centers. These are the same testing centers used for the FE and FS exams currently.
  • Both NCEES PS and OHPS will be offered year-round
  • Testing “windows” are broken into quarters with no off-months between quarters: Jan-March, April –June, July-September, October-December
  • Applicants will be able to take the NCEES exam one time per quarter and up to three times a year (so at least one quarter off). Applicants can take the OHPS exam one time per quarter and up to two times per year.
  • Ohio examinees must apply to and obtain approval from the Ohio Board before taking the NCEES PS and OHPS exams. Separate instructions for different situations of applying listed below.
  • NCEES results should be available 7-10 days after taking the NCEES PS test
  • The OHPS will still have 6-8 weeks turn around on grading because of the written legal description.
  • The NCEES PS exam will be 7 hours total broken down into the following: 6 hours of actual examination, 10 minutes of administration (instructions, survey), optional 50 minute break in the middle.
  • The NCEES PS exam will be offered any time the chosen testing center has availability/open hours
  • The OHPS will be scheduled on set Board testing days (generally 1-2 times per month, depending on demand and staff availability)
  • Applicants will have to contact the Ohio Board to set up 2-hour OHPS like comity applicants do currently.
  • The NCEES PS exam will continue to be a closed-book exam aside from the electronic reference book provided at the exam site
  • The OHPS will continue to be an open book exam. A list of available references are available on the Board’s website.

Who is eligible

Any applicant that meets Ohio surveying licensing requirements for licensure and has been approved by the Ohio Board to take the exam

Any applicants that has taken and passed the NCEES PS exam and meets Ohio’s surveying requirements for licensure

Register with NCEES and then send an approval application to the Ohio Board.

Receive a passing score on the NCEES PS exam and then contact the Ohio Board for OHPS scheduling (NOTE-if you took the NCEES PS exam in another state

 

 

 

Changes to the process

The Principles and Practices exam (NCEES PS exam) will no longer be offered at the biannual exam sites. The exam is now administered as a computer-based exam, year-round at Pearson Vue testing centers found world-wide.

The Ohio state-specific surveyor exam (OHPS) will now be offered in the Board’s office, year-round. The paper and pencil format and multiple choice/written legal descriptions will stay the same.

How can I apply for the exam

Online registration opened June 20, 2016 through NCEES’s website. All applicants taking the exam in Ohio must first be approved by the Ohio Board. Applications for approval are found at http://www.peps.ohio.gov/Exams/PS|OHPS.aspx

 

For those that have taken and passed the NCEES PS exam prior to June 2016, you will need to send the Ohio Board the re-exam application and $75.00 application fee.

 

For new applicants, you will need to take and pass the NCEES PS exam first, and then contact the Ohio Board to schedule your OHPS exam.


Forms and Instructions

  1. Download and complete the 4 page Ohio PS Exam Approval Application
  2. Submit the application, application fee, transcripts, and verification (if applicable) to the Ohio Board
  3. The Board will process, review, and approval if the applicant meets Ohio laws and rules for licensure.
  4. The Board will mail an approval letter with instructions to register with NCEES through NCEES.org for the actual exam.
  5. Applicants will schedule their exam through NCEES to sit for an exam at a qualified Pearson Vue testing center.
  6. Once the exam is taken and a passing grade received, you will need to contact the Ohio Board to schedule your Ohio state-specific surveying exam.

Re-exam for NCEES PS exam - No application needed

  1. Once you received approval from the Ohio Board, you do not need additional approval to re-take the NCEES PS exam
  2. Re-apply and pay the exam fee to NCEES through NCEES's website
  3. Applicants will schedule their exam through NCEES to sit for an exam at a qualified Pearson Vue testing center.
  4. Once the exam is taken and a passing grade received, you will need to contact the Ohio Board to schedule your Ohio state-specific surveying exam.

Re-exam for the OHPS exam - -->Re-examination application

  1. If you have passed the NCEES exam, but need to re-take the 2-hour OHPS exam, download and complete the 2-page re-exam application
  2. Submit the re-exam application and application fee to the Ohio Board
  3. The Board will verify your eligibility and then send an approval letter with instructions for scheduling your OHPS re-exam in the Board offices.
