Comity [pronounced ‘comedy’ with a ‘t’] is Ohio’s application process where a currently licensed professional engineer or professional surveyor in good standing may apply for an Ohio license based on their license in another state or U.S. jurisdiction. The Board does not automatically grant an Ohio license because an individual is licensed in another jurisdiction.

Professional engineer comity applicants must have passed the Fundamentals exam and Principles and Practice exam. Applicants must have an accredited engineering degree and a minimum of four to eights years of engineering experience.

Ohio provides three application choices for P.E. comity.

Standard P.E. Comity Application

The standard 4-page P.E. comity application includes includes one additional form. PES 2013-OH is the verification request you will need to send to the Board(s) where you passed your exams and were initially licensed. We will not be able to review your application until we have received the completed verification request(s).

The standard comity form requests personal information, photo, proof of higher education (including transcripts), engineering work experience, supervisor information and references.

NCEES P.E. Comity Application

The NCEES P.E. comity application is only for professional engineer comity applicants who have an NCEES council record.

IMPORTANT! The State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors does not know if you have an NCEES council record. It’s your responsibility to verify your council record status with NCEES before submitting this application to the Board. You will need contact NCEES and have them transmit your council record to the Board. Your application will be reviewed after receiving your council record.

Model Law Engineer P.E. Comity Application

7-day turnaround

The MLE P.E. comity application is only for professional engineer comity applicants who meet the NCEES Model Law Engineer status for professional engineers.

IMPORTANT! The State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors does not know if you are an NCEES Model Law Engineer. It’s your responsibility to verify your council record status with NCEES before submitting this application to the Board.

NOTE: When applying for P.E. registration using this application, the Board will request verification directly from NCEES; you do not need to request that NCEES send your council record to us.

The turnaround time for an MLE P.E. Comity Application is generally within seven days; but this cannot be guaranteed,

P.E. Temporary Permit Application

A temporary permit application cannot be processed unless accompanied by a permanent application for comity registration. If the temporary permit is granted it will extend until the Board has acted on the application for registration as a professional engineer in Ohio by comity. A Model Law Engineer comity application supercedes a temporary permit application and any temporary permit application accompanying an MLE application will be discarded.

If the Board subsequently determines that an application for comity registration does not meet the requirements of Ohio Revised Code Chapter 4733 the temporary permit will be immediately revoked.
